By Ye Wenchao (Wendy)In order to commemorate World Water Day, select students from Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication have worked on individual stories related to water.
From stories on the local Gung Fu tea tradition and weak sewage systems, to fish ponds and polluted waterways, our journalists-in-the-making have worked to highlight some of the untold stories of Shantou’s water.
Starting March 22nd, we invite you to read the first of the Shantou Water Stories from the students of Advanced International Journalism. The webpage also highlights some of the pictures taken by the students of Advanced Photojournalism for a semester-long project on water. Each week, a few more stories and pictures will be highlighted on the webpage.
World Water Day was initiated following a United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. At the governmental level, individual states were encouraged to adopt U.N. recommendations relative to the context and reality of each country. At the public level, local organizations from around the world have used the day to launch awareness about water-related issues such as privatization, conservation, sanitation and, this year’s theme, transboundary waters. In 2003, the United Nation’s General Assembly, dedicated the years 2005 to 2015 as the International Decade for Action ‘Water for Life’. The effort was initiated to bring attention and effort to attaining internationally recognized commitments such as the reduction by half of the number of people without access to safe drinking water as part of the Millennium Development Goals.
We would like to thank Fu Fengyun for his extraordinary work in putting together the webpage to highlight all the stories and pictures.
Please join us in reading stories from the students of and helping to inspire awareness.
