Shantou has begun to ban free plastic bags commonly given out at supermarkets and shops from June 1, according to an article in the Shantou City News (SCN). Instead, consumers are encouraged to use recyclable bags, such as cloth bags, to carry their items, or to pay for plastic bags. Read more…

Six days after the deadly earthquake in Sichuan, rescue workers were both finding survivors and recovering bodies. According to the Emergency Office of the State Council, as of 2 PM on May 18th, the official death toll from the calamity was 32,477. Along with many cities in China, Shantou reached out to Sichuan, donating money and necessities for emergency aid to the Sichuan people. One day in March 2008, Lee, around 25, shopped with his friend in Jin Xin Road in downtown Shantou. The street also called Walking Street was crowded with young people every where buying clothes as usual. Almost in the same second, some boys and girls around Lee stop moving: two boys and two girls were playing gobang on the floor, one young man were sending sms when walking, two guys were playing flyingcup game on the table in the middle of the street… For 5 minutes, up to 20 young people in the street were keeping still, even though they were in the middle of walking, drinking or tying shoelaces. Shantou Airport has implemented a new regulation, forbidding passengers to carry liquid goods with them on the domestic flights.
A staff member of the Shantou Airport security checkpoint said that besides common liquids, like water and drinks, the liquid items prohibited from being carried will also include soup, cream, lotion, toothpaste, perfume, shaving cream, aerosol and jelly. A ceremony celebrating the maiden voyage of the Shantou port-Mediterranean international container liner route was held at Guang’ao harbor on March, 7, 2008.
The sea route is a true international container route, which will increase local imports and exports, enhance the capacity of Shantou port, and even contribute to the Shantou economy, according to the report. Read more…
