Located in the west gate of Jinmei Garden in Jinsha road, there is a parlor called “Red Dragon Tattoo Studio” (赤龍紋身)—four words in red lettering. Different tattoo designs lay in the shop window, artistic though simple. Separated from the waiting room with the glass door, a curtain provides some privacy for customers. It’s easy to see the equipment and tools in the studio are quite professional, and everything there seems in order. Six days after the deadly earthquake in Sichuan, rescue workers were both finding survivors and recovering bodies. According to the Emergency Office of the State Council, as of 2 PM on May 18th, the official death toll from the calamity was 32,477. Along with many cities in China, Shantou reached out to Sichuan, donating money and necessities for emergency aid to the Sichuan people. Some Shantou residents even drove to Sichuan with food on their own and provided assistance directly. Read more…

On Thursday night, three days after the “5.12” Sichuan earthquake, Shantou University students gathered and offered prayers for mourning for the people killed in the “5.12” Sichuan earthquake .
About 50 to 60 students and teachers, half of whom were Sichuanese, held candles and sang after 9 pm on Thursday.
The university and the foundation that supports it are engaged in a variety of commemoration and donation activities in response to the worst earthquake in China in thirty years. Read more…

Located on a hill near Shantou Seismological Bureau, near Shantou University, there is a dilapidated shanty standing amid a rubbish dump. A dog is barking outside the shanty, seemingly at his master. An old man with gray hair stoops with difficulty to pick up the wine bottles which are thrown away by others. When he finishes separating the rubbish into different categories, he lights up a cigarette and puffs deeply.

Hand in hand, forming a big word “NO,”40 young people gathered in front of Xiangyuan House and used performance art to protect the old house from tearing down.
Xiangyuan House is a European style building in the old section of the city. It was built as a personal house during the period of the Republic of China (1921-1949), and became public property in 1949. Now it is a kindergarten under the threat of being demolished. Read more…
